Bank of Canada Announcement – April 16, 2025

In this blog:

What Does the Bank of Canada do?
Eight times a year, the Bank of Canada (BOC) announces its benchmark lending rate based on an assessment of the Canadian economy. This rate directly impacts variable interest rate products, such as mortgages, loans, and lines of credit, as banks and lenders adjust their prime rates accordingly. Understanding these changes can help you make informed financial decisions. For more information, take a look at our blog post summarizing four of the most frequently asked questions regarding the BOC.

Below, we break down the latest announcement and what it means for you.

Were there any Changes to the Interest Rate?

Amid ongoing uncertainty around the evolving trade conflict with the US, the Bank of Canada has opted to hold its key interest rate steady at 2.75 percent today.

What Information did the Bank Share about the Economy?

Canadian Economy

  • The bank cited that the volatility caused by tariffs has created uncertainty in forecasting both GDP growth and inflation. In today’s Monetary Policy Report (MPR), two potential economic scenarios for Canada are presented:

    • Scenario 1: Tariffs remain limited in scope, leading to slower economic growth while inflation stays near the 2% target.
    • Scenario 2: An ongoing trade war results in a recession in 2025, with inflation temporarily rising to 3% in 2026.

  • The bank’s press release also acknowledges that multiple scenarios could unfold depending on how global trade tensions evolve.
  • Inflation rose to 2.3% in March, driven by higher goods prices and the end of the temporary GST/HST suspension.
  • Over the next year, CPI inflation is expected to face downward pressure due to the elimination of the consumer carbon tax and lower global oil prices. However, tariffs and supply chain disruptions could lead to price increases in certain sectors.

Global Economy

  • Global economic growth was strong at the end of 2024, and inflation was trending towards central bank targets. However, the outlook for 2025 has weakened.
  • Key indicators point to a slowdown in the US economy, with inflation forecasts rising.
  • Oil prices have dropped significantly since January, primarily due to softer global economic growth expectations.

How does this Impact Me?

  • Borrowing costs for mortgages and other loans are likely to remain unchanged as a result of today’s announcement.
  • Weaker consumer confidence, reduced business investment, and a slower job market are likely to impact Canadian spending and employment outlook.
  • Certain products may see an increase in price, with businesses passing on the cost of tariffs to consumers.

Will there be any Interest Rate Changes in the Near Future?

Canada’s central bank has expressed its intention to proceed with caution, carefully monitoring several key factors, including:

  • The potential reduction in demand for Canadian exports due to higher tariffs;
  • The effects of tariffs on business investment within Canada;
  • The impact on employment and household spending;
  • The timing and extent of cost increases for consumers; and
  • The expected trajectory of inflation over time.
